“What Up Doe, Whadupdoe, Waddupdoe: It’s a greeting, a phrase, a word with multiple spellings, yet one meaning — home. “
Natasha T. Miller, Hour Detroit
WHUTUPDOE!
I’m Marcel Friday, a Senior level Social Media Manager, Social Strategist, Creative Strategist, and Copywriter with over 15 years of marketing experience for some of the largest entertainment brands in music, television, and film. I’ve also lent my words as a music & culture journalist over the past 16 years for outlets such as: Time.com’s Detroit Blog, Vibe Magazine (print & web), Billboard.com, HipHopDX, and more.
My passion for entertainment started as a kid. Through my mom, I developed a love for the arts. I was obsessed with music as my mom kept the house, and her car, full of classic tunes from Motown to Stax Records and everything in between. And TV/film? Let’s just say that my mom’s house still has about a thousand VHS tapes of her favorite movies dating back to the 80’s!
Using the creative passion my mom instilled in me, I got my start in entertainment with the Detroit Pistons in 2003 as a Multimedia Intern (ask me about the Malice At The Palace… I was on the court working)! In only 2 months, I was moved from intern to production staff where I’d work the next 3 playoff runs.
From there, I’d take that passion from live production to music marketing at Universal Music Group, serving two titles simultaneously: Mailroom Coordinator and Midwest Country Music Marketing Rep. My time in music has seen me successfully and seamlessly transition between: music & culture journalism (17 years and counting), artist management (secured two record deals, CMJ #1 chart topping Hip-Hop artist), and concert promoter (produced multiple shows across Detroit, Los Angeles, and SXSW).
I developed a true, natural passion for marketing at UMG and that has lead me to where I am today: a dedicated, hard-working, naturally inquisitive social & digital marketer that is passionate about storytelling and authenticity.
