Originally posted on HipHopDX 1/31/2017

Los Angeles MC Casey Veggies has been on a bit of a hiatus. His last mixtape, Customized Greatly Vol.4, was only his second project in about three years along with his debut album, Live & Grow that dropped in 2015. Veggies recently stopped by the DXHQ to hit play on some new music and talk shop about his relationship with Roc Nation.

“I’m managed by Roc Nation,” Casey says. “I think it means [I’m] doing something right but it doesn’t mean [I] have it all figured out or will be the next big thing.” Casey first caught the attention of Roc Nation’s leader Jay Z when he was only 17 years old.

EDITORIAL: Farewell, Barack!

Originally posted on HipHopDX 1/21/2017

Dear President Obama,

As a wide-eyed 24-year-old black man in the Metro Detroit area, I walked into my local polling place wearing my “Fuck Joe The Plumber” t-shirt in 2008 to cast my vote. For the first time in my life, I had the opportunity to participate in an American government system I never felt represented me until you shook my foundation. Like many of my contemporaries, I’ve never seen a government that I felt represented me let alone look like me. Sure, I can remember parts of Coleman A. Young’s 20 years as Detroit’s Mayor and Dennis Archer’s stint as Mayor on a local level. But a black man as President? That was unfathomable.

INTERVIEW: Siya Reveals She Had The “Crazy In Love” Beat Before Beyoncé

Originally posted on HipHopDX 12/20/2016

Could you imagine your 2003 without Beyoncé’s then biggest hit of her career? According to Sisterhood of Hip Hop star and Brooklyn MC Siya, that was almost a possibility.

“I had that muthafucking Beyoncé ‘Crazy In Love’ beat before Beyoncé had it. I spit a freestyle to it in a meeting, maybe at Sony or some shit,” Siya recalled during her recent #DXLive segment. “They fell in love with me. They were like, ‘Alright this is it. Can we put you in a dress? Can you rap about boys?”

INTERVIEW: Bladadah!: Mozzy Runs Through The Sacramento Slang Dictionary

Originally posted on HipHopDX 12/8/2016

In the realm of Hip Hop, California has been at the forefront of the culture for decades. Los Angeles and the Bay Area have been important staples in helping to shape the entire genre. Sacramento native Mozzy stopped by DXHQ to shed some light on why his stomping grounds is often left out of the equation and discuss their own unique culture.

“We ain’t got the recognition we need,” exclaims Mozzy. “They ain’t talking about us enough. Where the check? Where the bag? They ain’t came with that baggage, that luggage, so we just still cooking.” When asked about why we haven’t seen rappers from Sacramento, Mozzy explained, “It’s segregated. The Bay Area, for Northern California, is the market. That’s the market. Ain’t no other market.”

ALBUM REVIEW: E-40 – The D-Boy Diary

Originally posted on HipHopDX 12/2/206

Longevity and Hip Hop aren’t words that are commonly synonymous. There’s keeping your name relevant throughout the years and then there’s being able put out a consistent body of work to match. The Bay Area leads the league in all of those statistical categories thanks to E-40. The dual book D-Boy Diary stands as 40’s 23rd and 24th studio albums and slowing down is not the motto here. But with this latest album set coming in at 44 tracks over the course of three hours, perhaps it’s time Charlie Hustle paced himself a little better.

By the way, that wasn’t a typo. The D-Boy Diaries are an asinine 44 tracks in length, spanning over the course of an entire Lord of the Rings movie. Yep, you can ghostride the whip all the way to Mordor and still have some E Fonzarelli music to spare. That’s the thing about being indie; an A&R to help you vet bad ideas is always ideal. If there’s anyone who could pull it off, however, it’s Earl Stevens. Despite having a rollout longer than a lot of current MC’s entire discography, E-40 shows why he had been able to remain relevant over the past four decades.

EDITORIAL: Make The Internet Great Again: Fake News Is Poison

Originally posted on HipHopDX 11/20/2016

Headline heat. We’ve all fallen victim to it once or twice. That’s what good copy editing does after all, right? At the end of the day we’re all searching for validation of our opinions and emotions.

Did you see that self-indulging asshole Kanye West put up 106 points on a wheelchair basketball team again over the summer like he “balled so hard” on them in 2014? That sounds like actions of the creative deviant who believes the world centers around him. You took to Facebook with an ire and drafted your manifesto of hate with as many typos as your rushed train of thought could muster. “Fuck Kanye West.” “That nigga trash bro lol.” “OMG he’s so disgusting. How could a person really do that to those people?”

ALBUM REVIEW: IshDARR Exhibits Modest Growth On Broken Hearts & Bankrolls

Originally posted on HipHopDX 11/6/2016

For Milwaukee MC IshDARR, his life has to be playing out like a dream. Two years ago, he was a senior at Messmer High School piecing together what would become his career with his then music teacher. Fast forward to 2016 and the 20-year-old is taking meetings with labels, having young Hollywood starlets tweet his music and releasing his second full-length project Broken Hearts & Bankrolls.

At first listen, Broken Hearts & Bankrolls doesn’t carry the normal inequities you’d expect from an artist who isn’t old enough to legally drink. The production is robust and mixed with attention to detail. His flow is polished. The storytelling sequencing is spot on and there is a preset focus on the direction of the music.

Kayla Brianna, R&B’s newest darling, recently stopped by DXHQ and announced that she’s teaming up with London on da Track for a new EP. “London on da Track and I are actually doing an EP together so I’ll be going to Atlanta in a couple weeks to work on that.” The announcement comes on the heels of her latest single and video “Work For It” produced by London and featuring YFN Lucci.

Also known as the daughter to NBA champion and NBA on TNT star Kenny Smith, the 23-year-old artist is looking to break out and make a name for herself in music. The partnership with London aims to do just that. London has made a name for himself over the past four years, producing for all of the South’s heavyweights from Waka Flocka Flame, Gucci Mane, Rich Homie Quan and Travis Porter to fellow Cash Money artists Lil Wayne and frequent collaborator Young Thug. London is best known as the mastermind behind the boards on T.I.’s 2014 RIAA gold-selling winner “About the Money” featuring Young Thug and Rich Gang’s chart-topping single “Lifestyle.”
