Fresno MC and Mass Appeal artist Fashawn stopped by #DXLive to give us the exclusive on his forthcoming effort. “It’s about to drop on y’all, probably April 29th, the day of Grizzly Fest. Y’all the first people I’m telling this to,” says Fashawn. “It’s called Manna. That’s where the beauty comes from. I had to figure out a title that really encompassed [how I feel],” Fashawn explains to the #DXLive cast as HipHopDX Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark pointed out the parallel to the Bible where manna was “coming down from the sky.”
Fashawn also discusses the confusion between mixtapes and albums. “It’s a project. I don’t even know anymore [if there’s a difference between albums and mixtapes], the lines are so blurred. I just call them projects. The Fresno MC also goes into detail about what we can expect from Manna, “It’s just me,” Fashawn exclaims when asked about features. “I got love for everybody in Hip Hop but a lot of cats just didn’t make the cut. I still got time to work on the project so I’m still laying the finishing touches on it [so] you never know. I got a few people in mind so hopefully if their schedules permit it [and] if they got enough love for the kid they can [send their verses in].”

Could you imagine your 2003 without Beyoncé’s then biggest hit of her career? According to Sisterhood of Hip Hop star and Brooklyn MC Siya, that was almost a possibility.
“I had that muthafucking Beyoncé ‘Crazy In Love’ beat before Beyoncé had it. I spit a freestyle to it in a meeting, maybe at Sony or some shit,” Siya recalled during her recent #DXLive segment. “They fell in love with me. They were like, ‘Alright this is it. Can we put you in a dress? Can you rap about boys?”

ALBUM REVIEW: Rich The Kid & Famous Dex – Rich Forever II

Queens born, Atlanta raised MC Rich The Kid represents a new generation of rap in 2016. Signed to a collection of labels including Quality Control, the Lyor Cohen led 300 Entertainment, and his own Rich Forever imprint, Rich’s sound comes from the mold of his QC label-mates Migos. Rich Forever II, with his Rich Forever signee and Chicago MC Famous Dex, is Rich’s 15th mixtape since stepping on the scene in 2013—his 3rd in the past 4 months alone.
Rich Forever II opens with “Plug Callin,” an ode to Rich and Dex’s non-English connect over deep bass and a simple piano riff. Mixing trap rap with finesse, the two offer nothing of lyrical value other than flossing on record with bars like, “I’m rich forever, rock star chain heavy metal/rings on me, been the champ racks on me nigga limp.” The two follow the trend on the next track with the Wiz Khalfia-assisted “2 Times.” Not to ever be outdone on mediocrity, Wiz Khalifa claps back with humdrum delivery and uninspired bars, “Got a new bitch that I met only let me hit two times, kick a bitch right off the futon/I’m getting that bread like a crouton.”
